Eighteen questions, answered plainly.
These are the questions people ask about WhatsCook.ing, written the way they ask them. If yours is not here, write to us and a person answers.
Is there an app that makes a meal plan from what is in my fridge?
Yes, several work this way, and they differ in where the list of your food comes from. SuperCook is free and asks you to tick ingredients from a list, then shows recipes that use them. Cooklist builds a pantry from your grocery loyalty card. WhatsCook.ing reads a photograph of your shelf or fridge and writes a full week of recipes around what it finds, with a shopping list for the gaps.
How does it read my pantry?
You photograph the shelf, the fridge or the whole cupboard, and the photo is read by Google Gemini, which returns the items it can see and their quantities. That becomes a pantry list you can edit. As you cook through the week, the amounts come down, so the picture stays current without you keeping a list by hand.
What if it reads my shelf wrong?
You correct it. Every item can be added, edited or removed by hand, and anything you added yourself survives the next photo, so a correction is not undone the next time you take a picture. If something is missing, add it and the next plan uses it.
Does it work without buying groceries?
Yes. You can ask for a week built strictly from what you already own, with nothing added to a shopping list. If the pantry cannot honestly carry a full week, the app says so before it generates rather than inventing ingredients you do not have.
What is a pantry-only week and why is it shorter?
A pantry-only week is a week written strictly from the food already on your shelf. If your pantry is missing a whole food group, seven honest days cannot be built from it, so the app writes four days instead and tells you that before it starts. Four days there is the intended result, not a fault.
Can I swap a meal?
Yes. If a planned dish is not what you want, swap it and you get a different dish with its own photo and macros, still inside your diet and your targets. There are five swaps a week. A dish you rejected does not come back later that week.
What happens at the end of the week?
The finished week stays on screen. Nothing is deleted and nothing regenerates behind your back. When you are ready, one button plans the next week, and it starts from the pantry as it is now rather than as it was seven days ago.
What diets does it support?
The questionnaire covers omnivore, flexitarian, pescatarian, eggitarian, vegetarian, vegan, keto, paleo and low-FODMAP, along with your allergies. The diet you set is enforced on every meal in the week rather than suggested. Vegetarian here means plant based plus dairy and no eggs, and eggitarian means no meat or seafood with eggs and dairy allowed.
Do I have to weigh my food to use this?
No. There is no food diary to keep and nothing to weigh. Recipes are written for one serving and their nutrition is computed from the ingredients, so marking a meal as cooked is the whole logging step.
Is BioAge medical?
No. BioAge is an estimate built from the nutrition of the meals you actually cooked and logged, across four pillars: calorie fit, protein adequacy, micronutrient coverage and heart health. The method is explained inside the app. It is not a diagnosis, not a measurement of your body, and not a substitute for advice from a doctor.
How much does it cost?
WhatsCook.ing is $29.99 a month or $179.99 a year, billed through your Apple Account. The first week is free and no card is needed to start it. There is one membership and everything is included in both ways of paying.
Is there a free version?
No. The first seven days after you create an account are free with no card needed, and after that it is $29.99 a month or $179.99 a year. If you want a planner that stays free, Samsung Food and SuperCook both cost nothing and are good at what they do.
Is it on Android or the web?
No. WhatsCook.ing is an iPhone app, and there is no Android version and no web version. It is not on the App Store yet either, so there is nothing to install today. Leave your email at the bottom of this page and we will write on the day it is live.
What data leaves my phone and who sees it?
Two things leave. The pantry photos you take go to Google Gemini, which reads what is on the shelf. Your answers about diet, goals and body metrics go to Anthropic, which writes the recipes and the week around them. They are used only to read your shelves and write your week. Nothing is sold and nothing goes to advertising.
Does it use AI and can I say no?
Yes it uses AI, from two named services, and the app asks before it sends anything. A sheet names Google Gemini and Anthropic and says what each one receives, and you choose whether to continue. If you decline, the photo stays on the phone and nothing is sent.
How do I cancel?
Membership is billed through your Apple Account, so cancelling never involves us. Open the iPhone Settings app, tap your name, tap Subscriptions and choose WhatsCook.ing, or reach the same screen from Profile inside the app. Cancelling keeps your access until the end of the period you have paid for.
How do I delete my account?
Open Profile in the app and choose Delete account. That removes your sign-in, your meal plans, pantry, logs and BioAge history from our systems, and revokes Sign in with Apple if you used it. If you cannot open the app, write to support@whatscook.ing from the address you signed up with and we will do it for you.
What is a good Mealime alternative now that it is closing?
Mealime's own closing page says the app will be discontinued as of October 21, 2026, and points members to Meals Hub inside the Albertsons Companies store apps, which is free. If you want a free planner elsewhere, Samsung Food and SuperCook both cost nothing. We wrote a longer page about it, including where this app is not a like-for-like replacement, on the Mealime alternative page.
Two related pages: the Mealime alternative page and the best meal planning apps in 2026, which includes the apps that beat us.
On its way to the App Store.
